Congratulation! You just bought an Electric Vehicle, and you are very excited to drive it all around town for a minimal cost of 1.8 cents a kilometre (gas for a small car is around 7.7 cents a kilometre as I am writing.) in the Montreal Quebec area. Are you now asking yourself the following question? Which residential EV charging units should I buy concerning my New Electric Vehicle since the charger I got with my car is a level 1 charging unit, and it takes to long to load the car? Luckily for you, we will try to answer your question below shortly. First of all, your future residence EV charging station (also known as "Electric Vehicle (EV) supply equipment" or EVSE) will not charge your electric car. Your EV use's an onboard charger that transforms household alternating current 120-240v AC to the direct current 12v DC that is stored in your electric car internal batteries. So you will be able to supply electrical current to provide the inverting charger unit to fully load the battery pack of The Electric Vehicle You Now Own.
1- Check the Electric vehicle charging station car manufacturer requirements for a recharging EV Station Installation Specifications. 2- Most charger level 1 (12A 120V) will give a full charge with a hybrid car in less than 5 hours. The charger plugged into the residential property regular electrical outlet. If this is the case, you will not need an EV charger unit level 2 installed using (16A to 40A 240V). More significant the amperage the Charging Station offers, faster the charge will be and, resulting in a more extended trip capacity for the E vehicle. However, your electric car has requirements as far as charging power goes and, will not accept more energy than the inboard charger can accept per hour(see owners manual for your E vehicle specifications).
We calculated the battery pack on the Electric Vehicle Charging Storage Power in Kilowatt/ Hours (kWh). Presently, all the electric cars run on battery pack units averaging between 40 kWh (Nissan Leaf) and 100 kWh (Tesla S), also averaging 17 kilometres per kilowatt/hour of energy consumption.
Check out this example to simplify the E Vehicle Drivetrain energy consumption explanation :
As an example, a Nissan Leaf that has a full charge of 30 Kilowatt-hours (older model) battery pack and can run for 3.5 miles (5.63 km) per kilowatt-hour and has a reasonable mileage expectancy of 105 miles (168.98 km). This car had an inboard charger of a 6.6 kilowatt-hour.
1- Considering that the environment and temperature level are reasonable, our E vehicle should travel for a distance of 3.5 miles (5.63 km) X 30 Kilowatts stored energy = 105 miles (ca. 169 km) in total length or of energy utilized.
2- We can also determine that the inboard charging unit capacity will recharge the E vehicle (Nissan Leaf) according to the Electric vehicle charging station as follows; charging battery pack full load of 30 kilowatt capacity divides by the inverter charging unit total converting power of 6.6 kilowatt-hours will result of = 4.545 hours to obtain a full charge with a Level 2 (30A 240V) EV charging unit.
3- We can also say that a Level 1 (12A 120V) charging procedure would have taken 21.428 hours to charge the same E vehicle battery pack.
We can see here the importance to choose the right EV charging unit to fit your electric car battery charging specifications. Selecting the wrong unit would make no sense and would end up taking too much time.
Here I have put together a list of a few good charging units to ease your search. Also, examine the localization of the central unit and the length of the charging cable or extensions to reach your E electric car(s).
1- MORE EV Charger Level 2 240-32Amp
2- EV Charger Level 2 EVSE PHEV 100V-240V 16A
3- ChargePoint Home Wi-Fi Connected Electric Vehicle
4- JUICEBOX 40A Wi-fi Portable Smart EV Home Charging Station
5- WEBASTO EV Charger (240V) 30Amp
As per your Montreal home EV charging unit, you should make sure to install a new 240V 50A electric circuit breaker to service your new station. 100A would be even better for future demands (new EV vehicles with a bigger battery, etc.). This way, you can also charge two electric cars if necessary. Naturally, you can always upgrade the unit to a more powerful one in the future and still have a proper and safe installation to produce the extra power needed. You may have to upgrade your panel we add a sub-panel to supply this Ev charging station uniquely. Let not forget that such EV Charger installation demand not only registered electrician but also Well-Educated Electricians on Electrical DC Car Energy Needs. We at L&L Electric have experience in this field that is not well-known by most other electric companies. To correctly understand the demand for battery energy, we have to understand the concept of DC powerfully. We as electricians, were trained and worked daily in the AC world and typically don't know much about the DC power installations. To work in these fields and the Solar System Installation business, we had to take extra courses to fully understand the technology and the safety procedures to perform a proper EV Charging Installation. Also, we make sure that you get the best and maximum output EV charger unit to match the need of your vehicle inboard charging unit. Hope these simple explications help you make a better decision on the different Electric vehicles charging stations available. For more details don't forget to communicate with us. It will be a pleasure to explain all the details and the price structure for future EV Charger installation, all this in the comfort of your home, in a relaxed atmosphere and with a no-obligation proposal.
